Role Overview

The Media Buying Consultant will be responsible for developing and executing media buying strategies across broadcast, print, and digital platforms in line with client goals and campaign intent. The consultant will guide clients in making data-informed media investment decisions, manage third-party costs and production budgets, and ensure transparent reporting and skill transfer throughout the engagement.

Key responsibilities

1. Media strategy development
  • Design and deliver integrated media buying strategies tailored to each client’s objectives, target audience, and communication priorities.
  • Translate campaign goals into clear media plans covering broadcast (radio, TV), print (newspapers, magazines), and digital (online banners, social media, sponsored content, etc.).
  • Advise clients on media channels that offer the best return on investment and align with their strategic communication intent.
2. Campaign implementation and monitoring
  • Coordinate media placements across identified channels, ensuring all content is published on time and according to media plans.
  • Track performance of each media placement using reach, engagement, and conversion metrics.
  • Monitor campaigns in real-time to ensure optimization opportunities are explored and implemented where possible.
3. Client support and skills transfer
  • Work closely with identified client-side resources to co-create media buying plans and implement a structured skills transfer plan.
  • Provide ongoing guidance to build internal client capacity in media planning and procurement.
4. Budget management
  • Manage third-party media and production costs, commission structures, and ensure value-for-money media investments.
  • Liaise with suppliers, negotiate placement rates, and secure the best available deals within allocated budgets.
  • Ensure clear cost breakdowns are submitted to clients with full transparency.
5. Evaluation and reporting
  • Compile post-campaign evaluations, cost analysis, and audience reach reports for each media placement.
  • Identify trends, insights, and lessons learned to inform future strategies.
  • Flag any challenges or issues proactively and offer corrective solutions where needed.
Required qualifications and experience
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Marketing, Media, Advertising, or related field.
  • Five-plus years of proven experience in media buying, preferably within an agency or consultancy supporting both public and private sector clients.
  • Demonstrable experience buying and placing media across TV, radio, print, and digital platforms.
  • Strong understanding of South Africa’s media landscape and audience segmentation.
  • Solid grasp of media cost structures, commission models, and supplier negotiations.
  • Familiarity with media planning and analytics tools.

Contract details
  • Fixed-term consultancy based on client projects.
  • Remote or hybrid working possible; travel to client meetings or media houses may be required.
