Professor Karodia was one of the seven NMU alumni honoured for their overall contribution to South African society. Other recipients included Mr Deon Mayer, a journalist, Mr Pule Mothibe, a chartered accountant, Professor Elain Vlok, a woman empowerment specialist, Professor Braam van Wyk, a natural scientist, Ms Sunette Viljoen, an athlete renowned for her skills in throwing the javelin and Katlego Maboe, a TV presenter. These recipients join a prestigious group of recipients, especially when one considers that other alumni awardees included the likes of former president Mr FW de Klerk, Judge Yvonne Mokgoro, Judge Bess Nkabinde and Mr Etienne le Roux.

Professor Karodia, a scion of the famous Chota Motala family, well known for its struggle history, has in his own right been involved in many struggles. He is a survivor of cancer, fought a worthy battle to get professional recognition for black veterinarians, and assisted in the transformation of the education sector in North-West Province whilst he was Director General of the province. He continues with his quest to bring about reforms in the health sector, and this is clearly evinced in his research papers.

Besides holding nine academic qualifications, which include his Doctor of Philosophy degree, he has a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree, a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology. He has published more than 250 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and they cover issues of policy, health care, education, business education, political economy and social science. He has presented papers at both national and international conferences and is Visiting Professor at Novosibirsk University in Russia. Currently, he is a Senior Academic and Researcher at Regent Business School.

He continues to be a mentor to young academics and researchers and is actively involved on community outreach programmes.

His message to the young aspiring academics and professionals is simple - keep your eyes on the prize and work hard and intelligently to achieve your goal.

The Regent Business School community proudly salutes this son of Africa. May God give you the energy, life and peace to continue with your struggle to empower the less fortunate of the earth.
