Guest speakers, Marike Brown and Anne Shanmugam, from the Department City Planning, City of Tshwane, gave an overview of the 25 street name changes that recently occurred in Pretoria. Interesting facts, the impact of name changes, as well as the process of the renaming of streets in Tshwane were explained. The task was carried out extremely efficiently and the street name boards display the new name together with the old name, with a strike through, for the next two years to ensure the public become familiar with referencing the new street names.
The importance of accurate and up-to-date datasets remains core to the AfriGIS product range. The AfriGIS National Address Database (NAD) maintains these updates by assigning each street address with a unique numeric AfriGIS NAD ID, which stays unique despite street name changes. The unique identifiers streamline the geocoding process, especially when implementing a client database, as well as maintaining customer address information. The Intiendo Geocoding Web Services can be used where an address needs to be validated and/or geocoded on demand. The importance of the relationship between Value added Deeds data, Cadastre and NAD was also explained and emphasised the main challenge, which is to maintain a high percentage link between the value added deeds and cadaster. AfriGIS has, on average, added 100 000 addresses with each data release, increasing coverage each quarter.

Maintenance releases occur every quarter. The use of datasets is governed by the AfriGIS Data License Agreement. On acquisition of data from AfriGIS, all aspects of the data license, such as the licensed sites or users, license period and type of use will be incorporated in the Data License Agreement.
