Kevin Bingham
Kevin Bingham is the current president of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA). He is a director of FGG Architects with offices in Durban, Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg. He is an honorary senior lecturer in architecture and has lectured in both architecture and interior design in South Africa, Australia, and in the UK.
Bingham has served on the SAIA National Board from 2012 and serves on SAIA's Exco and Transformation Committee. He is also one of the founding directors of SAIA's Open Architecture programme, enabling architectural technologists wishing to progress towards a professional architect status, the opportunity to study and work simultaneously.
Bingham lectured at Natal University/UKZN from 1997 to 2007 and was the academic coordinator for the final two years of this phase in his career. He holds a diploma, a bachelor's and research master's degrees in architecture, and has recently placed his PhD research on hold to fulfil his SAIA commitments. He is an honorary senior lecturer in architecture at UKZN and besides having lectured and examined in both architecture and interior design in South Africa, he has taught at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, and at the Liverpool School of Architecture in the UK.
Bingham has served, and continues to serve as the chairperson on numerous boards, committees, and trusts, in education, architecture, interior design and yachting, at local, regional and national levels. He has his national colours in the sport of sailing and has until recently served his club as vice-commodore. He is also a national sailing race officer.
Bingham is married, with two adult sons, and while not busy with the above mentioned roles, can be found jogging beside the sea, or in the gym, or drinking coffee outdoors.
