The Department of Interior Design and Décor seeks to appoint an outstanding individual with a keen interest in teaching interior design. The ideal candidate will contribute effectively to the academic and creative life of the academy. A strong understanding of structural and finishing materials, spatial planning, and experiential design is essential, along with the ability to develop and implement design strategies. The appointee will also contribute to cross-disciplinary projects in innovation and teaching.
The successful candidate will share their vision for enhancing the programme by building on the academy’s strengths while developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant.
This role profile is indicative, not prescriptive, and the balance of duties will be in accordance with the employment contract.
Principal duties and responsibilities
Teaching and learning support
- Module development and delivery – Design, develop, and deliver modules at various levels, including new qualifications, ensuring compliance with SAQA, CHE, and academy standards.
- Digital learning and course updates – Create and maintain virtual learning environments, continuously reviewing and updating course content.
- Effective teaching techniques – Implement innovative teaching methods and materials to engage students and foster understanding.
- Practical and software instruction – Teach and assess practical skills, software proficiency, and theoretical knowledge at the diploma level.
- Departmental and public engagement – Contribute to departmental administration, participate in professional meetings, and actively engage in public discussions.
Planning and managing resources
- Module delivery – Design and deliver module outcomes in compliance with academic regulations.
- Departmental contribution – Support departmental management, including budget planning, business strategies, and team collaboration.
- Strategic planning – Participate in departmental and institutional strategic planning initiatives.
- Research and resource management – Plan and deliver research or consultancy modules effectively within available resources.
- Quality and time management – Ensure quality standards are met while balancing teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.

- Passion and industry expertise – A strong commitment to design and décor practices.
- Communication skills – Proficiency in written, verbal, and academic English, as well as Afrikaans for effective interaction.
- Teaching proficiency – Ability to teach software, theory, and practical applications across various design concepts.
- Student development – Monitor student performance, provide constructive feedback, and offer professional coaching.
- Collaboration and planning – Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork in multicultural settings and excellent planning and administrative abilities.

- A recognised authority in the field of interior design.
- Deep understanding of the discipline, enabling the development of new knowledge with a particular emphasis on software, technical expertise, and design.
- A record of collaboration and cooperation with colleagues in a tertiary education environment.
Liaison and networking
- Engage in internal networks by chairing or participating in academy subcommittees.
- Develop links with external contacts such as educational bodies, employers, and professional organisations to foster collaboration.
- Establish external networks with external moderators, suppliers, and manufacturers for design talks.
Initiative, problem-solving, and decision-making
- Resolve issues affecting the delivery of qualifications within the programme in line with academic regulations.
- Make decisions regarding operational aspects of the programme.
- Support decision-making processes that impact related curricula.
- Contribute to the strategic development of new courses and areas of academic activity.
Minimum qualification requirements
- A proven track record of engagement in the interior design industry.
- A national diploma or degree obtained from an accredited educational institution.
- Comprehensive knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit. Proficiency in Adobe Suite would be advantageous.
- Previous experience in educational training or assessment would be beneficial.
