Eduvos 2024 Research Indaba: Empowering sustainable development in Africa
This year's theme aligns with Eduvos’s 2023–2027 Research Agenda. The Indaba will serve as a platform for Eduvos academics and students to present research that contributes to a thriving and sustainable future for Africa.
"At Eduvos, we believe research should transcend the boundaries of academia and make a real, lasting and meaningful impact on the communities we serve and the African continent as a whole,” says Eduvos head of research and postgraduate studies, Dr Nyx McLean. “Our Research Agenda has been designed to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, ensuring that the work we do contributes directly to the sustainable growth and prosperity of Africa. This approach enables us to produce research that is not only innovative but deeply rooted in the unique needs and opportunities of our continent."
The 2024 Research Indaba will bring together academic staff and students from across Eduvos’s four faculties to share their research within one of five key focus areas:
- Advancing Social Justice and Legal Equality for a Prosperous Africa
- Enhancing Organisational Performance, Sustainable Business, Entrepreneurship, and Management Practices
- Data Science and AI for Social Impact
- Advancing Biotechnology and Biomedicine for Sustainable Agriculture, Health, Water, and the Environment
- Empowering Diversity, Wellness, and Innovative Education
Each research presentation will be shared with Eduvos’s Research Committee for further review and potential integration into broader institutional initiatives. As Eduvos looks to the future, the institution plans to expand the format of the Indaba, transitioning into a hybrid event hosted across multiple campuses, ensuring greater engagement and collaboration among the academic community.
A long-term commitment to sustainable development in Africa
Eduvos is committed to driving Africa’s growth through long-term, impactful research. By maintaining the focus on empowering sustainable development throughout the duration of its Research Agenda, Eduvos aims to build a cumulative body of work that addresses Africa’s unique challenges. This consistency ensures a more meaningful and sustained focus on solutions that can positively shape Africa’s future.
“The 2024 Research Indaba is not just an event; it’s a reflection of our institution’s vision to see Africa transformed through research and innovation,” says Dr Tinaye Chivizhe, acting dean of faculties at Eduvos. “Our long-term commitment to sustainable development ensures that we continue to produce research that not only advances academic discourse but also directly impacts the communities we serve.”
A vision for 2027
Eduvos’s Research Indaba will serve as a vital step towards the goal of coming together in 2027 to reflect on the progress made during the five-year Research Agenda. This will culminate in a larger Research Indaba, showcasing the significant body of work developed under the theme of sustainable development and its tangible impact on the continent.
“We want to see research as a driving force for change,” adds Dr Chivizhe. “It’s about much more than publishing papers – it’s about creating a ripple effect that reaches beyond the academic sphere and into the heart of Africa’s development.”
